PEAVEY ARTISTS LAMB OF GOD, SLIPKNOT & MORE TO DOMINATE OZZFESTPeaveyPosted 2004-04-15 April 14, 2004, PEAVEY INT'L. HEADQUARTERS*When Ozzfest 2004 kicks off July 10, the annual traveling metal festival will focus on true underground metal with an intense Peavey presence. An astounding eight bands on this year's tour are Peavey endorsers, including main-stage thrashcore band Superjoint Ritual and second-stage headliners Slipknot, plus Atreyu, Every Time I Die, God Forbid, Otep, Unearth and Lamb of God.
While Slipknot and Otep have made previous laps around the U.S. with the Blizzard of Ozz, Lamb of God is one of the must-see bands of the new crop. The band has sown a huge underground audience on the strength of New American Gospel and As the Palaces Burn, both released on the small indie label Prosthetic Records, but will merge into the big arena with a new album on Epic this summer. Bassist John Campbell assures that this higher profile won't compromise his band's music.
"We're not going to tailor our record to fit some idea of what's going to sell," he says, "(but) we're becoming better musicians. Even on New American Gospel, there's melody and a lot of thought put into the arrangement and the whole structuring."
Campbell uses Peavey Millennium=AE bass guitars, well known in rock and metal circles for their sturdy construction and superior tone. "The Millennium is a dynamic bass," he says. "You can dial it to be muddy and thick or you can crisp it up. You can go pretty much anywhere." The EQ controls cover such a wide frequency range, he adds, that "as the strings start to go, you can push up the high end a little bit and clear up all the dirt and grime on the strings!"
Just as important for a touring bassist, though, is how well it perseveres gig after gig. "The Millennium is a solid bass that'll withstand the rigors of a touring metal band," he raves. "It's proven."
Lamb of God guitarist Willie Adler uses V-Type* guitars, while Paul Gray of Slipknot uses Pro Series* bass amps and cabinets and GPS power amps; Andy Williams of Every Time I Die uses Triple XXX guitar amps and V-Type guitars; eViL JaY of Otep uses Pro Series* bass amps and cabinets; and Ken Susi of Unearth uses 5150=AE guitar amps. Atreyu's Travis Miguel and Daniel Jacobs and God Forbid's Dallas and Doc Coyle also use 5150 guitar amps.
