Vocalist Jason 'Gong' Jones is the June Peavey Artist of the Month. June 3, 2004, PEAVEY INT'L. HEADQUARTERS—If the model holding a baseball bat on the cover didn't clue you in, the groove riffing on album-opener "Think" surely will— after a two-year hiatus, the brutal Texans in Drowning Pool are back.
After losing frontman Dave Williams to natural causes during the 2002 Ozzfest tour, Drowning Pool took time off to assess their next move: Is it better to honor their fallen bandmate by laying Drowning Pool to rest, or would a more appropriate tribute be to rise like a phoenix and reclaim their place in hard rock?
Let's just say the boys in Drowning Pool made the right decision. The proof is in Desensitized, the band's just-released second album, written and recorded with L.A.-based musician and tattoo artist Jason "Gong" Jones. The band recently returned to the stage on the MTV Headbanger's Ball Tour with friends Damageplan, with Jones using Peavey Pro Comm* 100-channel wireless microphones (PCX U1002) and even jamming backstage on the new, *ber-metal Peavey Rotor* guitar.
"The Rotor is slick," says Jones. "The neck feels great. I love that thing. Right now I'm just singing (on stage), but I write music on guitar. I'm actually going to use the Pro Comm mic on stage for the first time tonight, and I can't wait."
Touring with Damageplan—which includes longtime friends, fellow Texans and former Pantera principals Vinnie Paul and Dimebag—has made Jones's first road trip with Drowning Pool feel like home.
"Last night the whole band got onstage with Damageplan and played (the Pantera classic) 'Walk,'" exclaims Jones. "That's like playing with the Led Zeppelin of this kind of music. Pat (Lachman, vocals) and I are trading off and I look over and Dime's in my face with his guitar. I loved it."
