Jonathan Grossman has earned a stellar reputation composing songs and underscoring for popular TV programs including Joan of Arcadia. He looks to the Lexicon 960L Multi-Channel Digital Effects System to help create the incredibly alive and three-dimensional sound that characterizes his projects. As Grossman himself puts it, “You turn the 960L on, and suddenly everything sounds better.” Grossman is also the composer and leader of the band Dogwood Moon, and songs from their recordings have been featured on hit television shows, along with Grossman’s own original scores. He has additionally composed for NBC’s syndicated She Spies, as well as numerous commercials, network promos, and films including TriMark Pictures’ Sometimes They Come Back Again.

Grossman achieves prodigious output from his personal studio, using a Pro Tools system with Apogee converters and a Digidesign 192 digital interface. A key to the system’s efficiency is the Lexicon 960L’s ability to be brought into the system through its AES I/O ports. “I love that I don’t have to go through another A/D conversion,” Grossman remarks. “And there’s absolutely no latency.”

Grossman has an eight-engine 960L, allowing him to use eight discrete stereo reverb programs simultaneously. That, he says, significantly streamlines the stem mixing process, a critical advantage in the tight deadline environment of episodic television. “I can choose eight separate programs and pass signal to them simultaneously, which gives the tracks a wonderful consistency yet gives each its own character. For instance, I use a lot of acoustic guitar on Joan of Arcadia and the ambient and chamber programs on the 960L make them sound enormous without sounding muddy or boomy. With the 960L, I can go further than ever with the music because I’ve got reverb to spare.”
