Gary Grainger Bass

Gary Grainger Bass

Press Release

2005-07-09

Gary Grainger and PRS Guitars have finalized the designing and prototyping of a Gary Grainger Model 5-String Bass for Private Stock instruments. Gary’s remarkable credits include four years in John Scofield’s band playing with Dennis Chambers. He has also played with Frank Gambali, George Duke, and done innumerable studio dates with musicians like Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire. Gary Grainger is a PRS tradeshow clinician and plays bass in the Paul Reed Smith band.

Gary began work with Joe Knaggs and Paul Reed Smith on the Gary Grainger model Private Stock bass in 2003. The final design has now proven itself on over forty studio sessions, over one hundred concert dates and many tradeshows. PRS is releasing these 5-string instruments through the Private Stock department starting in mid-2005. The instrument has an unusual pickup arrangement, using four single coils combined into two “separated” hum-canceling pickups. This provides the instrument with both a depth and clarity while simultaneously providing the instrument with a mid-range voice. Also, incorporated in the design, is an optional manual compressor called a “ramp”, a beautiful wide-thin neck with a 16” fretboard radius, a specialized pre-amp, super thin Private Stock satin nitro finish and a newly design integrated neck joint in which the body and the neck are carved into one piece. This 5-string design includes a Private Stock carved, curly maple top with a mahogany back, rock maple neck and a Brazilian rosewood fretboard.

This is the first announcement that PRS is making about this design collaboration and Private Stock instrument availability. To order one, contact your PRS dealer, rep or distributor and order through the Private Stock department. Each instrument will be custom built using the existing design around the customer’s wants and specifications.
