The Recording Academy®’s Producers & Engineers Wing Announces the Success of Nashville Summit

Press Release

2005-07-12

Members of the music business community gathered in Nashville on June 7, 2005 as a panel of experts considered numerous scenarios for the future landscape of the multibillion-dollar global music industry. The summit, called “Death Of The Record Business? The Rebirth Of The Music Business,” was co-produced by The Nashville Chapter of The Recording Academy® and The Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing. The well-attended summit featured a panel discussion on many key points of change for music in the digital age, with an emphasis on music technology and how it has dramatically altered business models.

Shown from left to right are panel moderator George Massenburg (renowned producer/engineer and Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council member), with panelists Ken Levitan (president of Vector Management), attorney Linda Edell Howard (co-chair of Stokes Bartholomew’s IP/Entertainment/New Media Group and former VP/GM of PolyGram Music Publishing), engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, the Pixies, Helmet, John Spencer Blues Explosion), Mark Montgomery (managing partner/creative, Web, marketing and sales manager for echomusic) and mastering engineer Bob Ludwig (co-chair of the Producers & Engineers Wing Steering Committee).

The Producers & Engineers Wing was established for producers, engineers, remixers, manufacturers, technologists, and other related creative and technical professionals in the recording community. The P&E Wing provides The Academy with a vehicle to reach a specific constituency, to craft advocacy positions, and to better address the daily concerns of these professionals.

Currently, 6,000 professionals comprise the P&E Wing. This organized voice for the creative and technical recording community addresses issues that affect the craft of recorded music, while ensuring its role in the development of new technologies, recording and mastering recommendations, and archiving and preservation initiatives. The Wing builds on the existing regional professional development activities of the Academy, which include workshops, forums and panel discussions, and other recording technology-related events, all occurring locally and nationally throughout the year.
