Johnny Clegg Endorses Parker Guitars Press Release 2005-09-10
Parker Guitars has recently added legendary artist, Johnny Clegg, to their artist roster. Johnny has been playing guitar since 1967. He met band mate, Sipho Mchunu, and played his first duo at the University Great Hall in 1969. After forming the band called Juluka, they had their first major recording deal and their first hot song, “Woza Friday” in 1976. In 1979, Juluka released their first album, “Universal Men.” After successful tours through the US, Canada, UK, Germany, and Scandinavia, Juluka split in 1985.
Johnny Clegg then formed a band called, Savuka in 1985 mixing African music with Celtic folk music and international rock sounds. By 1989, Savuka sold over 1 million records with their debut album and the second reaching 700,000 units. In 1993, the band was nominated for a Grammy Award for best world music album. Since 1994, Johnny has been releasing solo albums, touring across the country, and working with Sipho Mchunu.
