AKG, dbx and Lexicon Help Launch Here, There and Everywhere by Geoff Emerick and Howard Massey (dbx | Posted 2006-05-05) AKG, dbx and Lexicon, leading professional audio brands of Harman International (NYSE-HAR), recently helped support the launch of Here, There and Everywhere (published by Gotham Books), the new book from legendary engineer/producer Geoff Emerick and renowned industry journalist Howard Massey, with the world’s first-ever music industry bi-coastal book launch party. Hosted by AKG, dbx and Lexicon at the famed Capitol Recording Studios in Los Angeles and at the Christopher Henry Gallery in New York, the events marked the introduction of the book that recounts “Geoff Emerick’s experiences in the studio with the Beatles, bringing to life the behind-the-scenes musical innovations and sonic experimentations that resulted in the group’s finest recordings.”
The guest list for the events read like a Who’s Who of the music industry, including: legendary producers/engineers Phil Ramone, Elliot Scheiner, Russ Titelman, Phil McDonald, John Kurlander, Mark Hudson, Eddie Kramer, Ross Hogarth; musicians/artists Art Garfunkel, Rory Kaplan, Gary Burr, Billy J. Kramer, Will Lee, Rich Pagano, Andy White, Omar Hakim; Capitol Recording Studios’ Andrew Slater and Paula Salvatore; as well as a host of prominent music journalists — in all totaling more than 200 attendees.
In addition, long-time friend/engineer and compatriot Richard Lush, who worked with Emerick at Abbey Road on Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt. Pepper and the White Album, flew in from Australia to surprise Geoff for the NY event. Geoff Emerick and Howard Massey received a multitude of congratulations from their peers, while Harman Music Group’s Executive Vice President of Sales, Buzz Goodwin, acted as master of ceremonies.
“Everyone at Harman Professional is extremely honored to help Geoff and Howard launch Here, There and Everywhere to the world,” commented Buzz Goodwin. “Geoff’s work with the Beatles, and everything he has done since then, has set the benchmark and truly established the art of audio engineering. Geoff’s engineering alone on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the foundation for modern recording as we know it today. We are very fortunate to be part of this landmark project and we look forward to working with and supporting Geoff and Howard in the future.”
AKG’s Vice President and General Manager, Doug MacCallum, echoed Goodwin’s comments, “The Beatles changed music forever and Geoff Emerick was an instrumental part in capturing their sound. As the first link in the recording process, we at AKG and Harman Pro appreciate and commend Geoff’s vision and creativity in stretching the boundaries of recording. To this day, Geoff continues to approach the recording process with fresh ears and innovative ideas, ultimately getting the most out of his artists no matter what genre of music.”
In Here, There and Everywhere, Emerick recounts his seven years working alongside the Beatles, pushing the limits of recording technology and pioneering methods that created a new signature sound for the band using such groundbreaking techniques as tape loops and vocal distortion (on “Tomorrow Never Knows”) and backwards recording (on “I’m Only Sleeping”). Nicknamed “Golden Ears” at Abbey Road, Geoff Emerick is also credited with engineering the first-ever worldwide live satellite broadcast that included John Lennon singing “All You Need Is Love” to an audience of millions.
