Roland Systems Group U.S. (RSG) announces the new EDIROL R-4 Pro, a four-channel portable field recorder with the much anticipated addition of time code. Easy-to-sync with video equipment, the new R-4 Pro accepts SMPTE time code enabling it to slave to video cameras, VTRs, etc. Four channels of high quality audio (up to 24 bit/96kHz) can be fully synchronized with video. In addition, the R-4 Pro can also act as the master, sending out time code to slave devices.

“The R-4 Pro provides the most affordable four channel portable solution to users with time code in their workflow. We’ve essentially halved the cost,” comments John Broadhead, Director of Technology for RSG. “It’s an ideal solution for the growing number of attractively priced HDV cameras equipped with time code such as the Canon XL H1 and the recently announced JVC GY-HD250U.”

The R-4 Pro offers instant backup via USB 2.0. The USB host terminal enables high speed and instantaneous backup of recorded data to affordable and easily obtainable media such as flash keys, memory cards via card reader or hard drives. This feature allows high-speed transfer of recorded data to improve production work flow in the field and across multiple locations. Additionally the user can plug the R-4 Pro into a PC or Mac and the internal drive pops up on the desktop for immediate access.

The R-4 Pro has an 80GB internal hard drive capable of capturing more than 100 hours of audio at 16 bit/ 48 kHz. The unit is also equipped with a 4pinXLR DC input to enable use of Anton-Bauer style external battery power.

The R-4 Pro enters a market well primed by the popular EDIROL R-4 field recorder. Both units feature wave editing, recording resolution selection, pre-buffer recording, effects and limiter.

The R-4 remains an affordable and effective choice for the existing SD camera base and the growing number of HDV cameras that are not equipped with time code. The R-4 is sill the only 4 –channel solution equipped with LANC capability as an alternative way to sync to non-time code equipment. The R-4 price point matches well with SD/HDV cameras and aligns closely with the price of two channel solutions with fewer features.

Selecting four channels over two channels gives users the ability to capture more ambient sound at a shoot, place mics on multiple participants and increase redundancy/backup in case of camera mic noise or drop out. Also, most video editing environments now support multi-channel audio as a standard.

The R-4 has immediate availability at a new list price of $1595. The R-4 Pro is expected to ship in September 2006 and will list at $2395.
