Peavey XXL Guitar Amplifier Head Wins Guitar Player Editors' Pick AwardPeaveyPosted 2003-03-28 Guitar Player magazine recently honored Peavey's XXL guitar amplifier head with its distinguished Editors' Pick Award. XXL Series amps feature Peavey’s exclusive TransTube technology, which emulates the sound of tube amplifiers while utilizing solid-state construction. Assistant Editor Jude Gold declared the XXL "fierce enough to have some 6L6s, 12AX7s and EL34s fearing for their jobs."
The XXL won the award for its innovative tube emulation technology, value and tone. "Practically every channel and voicing proved to be toothy and musical—especially when the amp's muscular power section was pushed hard," said Gold. "The tone seemed to get warmer as the amp got louder, and there was little evidence of the brittleness that plagues some solid-state amps."
Designed for heavy metal, classic rock and alternative rock guitarists, Peavey XXL amps deliver the tone, high output, warmth and “push back” of a tube amplifier without the hassle or cost of dealing with unpredictable tubes. The XXL's three-channel preamp and 100 Watt output stage provide the multiple personalities and power necessary for a versatile performance in today’s rock music. To help tailor its tone to fit any style, the XXL features bottom, body and edge active EQ on the Ultra channel, plus three-band passive EQ on both the Lead and Clean channels (all channels are fully independent).
"From barroom boogie to arena-rock anthems, the XXL delivers the goods," said Gold. "This amp watches your back no matter whether you're classic rocking or spewing aggro metal, or dipping between stylistic genres."
Peavey recently expanded the XXL Series to include the XXL 212 Combo (100 Watts), XXL 412 Cabinet (slant/straight models) and XXL 212 Cabinet.
