Two of Canada’s greatest contributions to humanity are certainly its national and always-victorious Hockey team, and a little band that you might have heard about, Rush. Take a bit of each, transform it into a DVD, and you’ve got Fire on Ice. This unique DVD features legend drummer Neil Peart’s journey on recording and rendition of the iconic sports theme “the Hockey Theme”, that for many can be considered Canada’s second national anthem. “The Hockey Theme” was written by Dolores Claman in 1968 and still remains as the sport’s trademark tune, able to induce an orgasmic scream from any Canadian dude at a Hockey game holding a Labatt Blue.
The DVD brings to viewers a behind-the-scenes video narrative where Peart explains the concept, development and recording of this rendition with his commonly known in-depth commentaries that express his deep passion for music. Also included is a Making of “the Hokey Theme” journal written by Peart with color photos that chronicles this eventful journey. Bonus material includes the production of the hockey team-logo-adorned drum set, “The Hockey Theme” music video and a surprise appearance of the Stanley Cup.
“When we started to search for finding iconic Canadians to give us their rendition of ‘The Hockey Theme,’ Neil jumped right to the front of the list without question,” recalled TSN’s Senior Vice President of Production Mark Milliere. Neil Peart said, “Without exaggeration, this is one of the greatest experiences of my life.”
If you haven’t had the chance to watch the final result of this rendition (just in case you are not Canadian, not into Hockey, or crazy enough to not care for Neil Peart) here is a video of the “The Hockey Theme” featuring the drum legend.
Neil Peart: Fire on Ice DVD is now available for $24.95 at music retail stores and at alfred.com/drums.
