Legendary rock drummer Carmine Appice is adding a new chapter to his famous literary legacy. Published by Hudson Music, Realistic Drum Fill: Replacements brings to all drummers, beginners and seasoned, a refined vocabulary of ideas for drum fills. Demonstrating many of the techniques that compose Appice’s signature drum style, the book focuses on the permutation of hands and feet strokes that culminates on elaborated drum fills. The book starts by introducing the replacement technique on eighth note fills. From there on, Mr. Appice pushes the concept further presenting it on triplets and sixteenth note patterns. At the end of each section, Play on Drums exercises show students how to use the teachings on applicable situations.
Realistic Drum Fills: Replacement includes an MP3 disc that contains audio examples of many of the patterns in the book performed by Hudson’s Senior Drum Editor Joe Bergamini, as well as video footage of Carmine in live performances that show how he uses these concepts.
Carmine Appice is best known for his associations with Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. Appice is also known for his showmanship, stick tosses and twirls. He is considered one of the most accomplished showmen in rock and was the first rock drummer to organize drum clinics held at college campuses, theatres, and drum stores.
His best-selling drum instruction book The Realistic Rock Drum Method was first published in 1972, and has since been revised and republished as The Ultimate Realistic Rock Drum Method. It covers the basic subjects of rock rhythms and polyrhythms, linear rudiments and groupings, shuffle rhythms, hi-hat, and double bass drum exercises.
