Carillon USA Launches at the 2002 NAMM Expo

Press Release

New venture Carillon Audio Systems USA introduces the world's first PC to be developed from the ground up for audio and music - the AC1. Carillon’s aim is to bring the predictability and ease-of-use associated with conventional hardware products (multitrackers, synths, samplers etc.), to the exponentially growing number of software-based musicians.

Strong but Quiet type
The all aluminum and steel rack-mount design is clearly built to last, won't rattle and provides considerable sound insulation to the already extremely quiet components, including Carillon's own Ultramute PSU. The graphs attached are based on independent anechoic chamber tests (data available on request) that showed the AC1 to be 5dB (1.8 times) quieter than a Mac G4 and 8dB (2.6 times) quieter than a Dell Dimension PC. Professional users of the Carillon AP-1 who were asked for a first impression on noise, inquired if the unit had been switched on yet!

Audio Features
Carillon's patent pending hardware has several audio specific features, like front-mounting Neutrik patching and bays for a range of inexpensive ($99) control panels for realtime fingertip control. Assignable MIDI knobs (RK8), 'tape transport' buttons (RTM1) and a jog-shuttle edit controller (JS1) are the first available.

Application oriented 'One Box' systems Trouble-free set-up and operation is the Holy Grail for computer musicians. Carillon's unique Total System Integration marries the AC1 with leading music software and hardware products in a range of seamless systems, ready to use out of the box. Each of the 23 systems is configured for a particular group of users and includes VST and Sonar Foundation Systems from $1,599, dedicated UltraSynth and Ultrasampler Systems through to the PostRoom editor/batch processor, right up to dedicated Nuendo and Pro Tools Workstations. Total System Integration combines software and hardware as never before. Extensive, illustrated, on screen manuals (Carillonhow) are provided for the system as an entity. For example, instructions on recording an audio track apply specifically to the multitrack software when used in conjunction with that particular system's audio card. An extensive trouble-shooting section (Carillonhelp) is kept up to the minute with FAQs and solutions via the internet.

('Barebones' and 'Custom' systems for experienced tech-heads are available from $1,199 with all the proprietary Carillon applications except the configuration-specific aspects of the Carillonhow manual).

Remote control technical support
If Carillonhelp doesn't get you out of trouble, an FOC remote technical support facility (Carillonfix) enables Carillon's tech support staff to literally take control of your system . A fix session is booked, and owners can watch any problems being fixed with the opportunity to 'chat' directly to the engineer about avoiding the problem in future.

Cyberstudio
Online applications are central to the Carillon concept and all systems have Pyro MP3 software pre-installed. Each computer is also supplied with Carillon's own Loopstation Sample Jukebox search engine pre-installed. Owners access Carillon's own E1 connected Sun server to preview and download from a comprehensive range (5,000 now, increasing several fold by the end of 2002) of premium quality, royalty-free samples, completely free of charge.

How much will all this cost?
Carillon intends to be a major music technology brand; to do this it will operate world-wide and market its products at very competitive price points - only 15-20% more than an equivalent 'plastic box PC' or significantly less than a comparable Mac package - unparalleled value when you consider everything that's included.

Pro users
Carillon already boasts some impressive end users. In-demand producer Mike Hedges (recent credits include U2, Travis, Manic Street Preachers) uses a Pro Tools LE workstation for comping and off-line editing, Sir George Martin's Air Studios have a system integrated into their AMS Audiofile/Logic-based editing suite. Air’s sound designer Chris Nuttall has tended to use the AC1 for all DSP functions on recent work for PlayStation and Xbox titles. Other prominent users include leading post house Grand Central and the Broadway production of the Abba musical 'Mama Mia'.

New Mackie MDR2496

Press Release

Mackie Designs Inc. announced today a new 24-bit/24-track non-linear hard disk recorder with a U.S. price of just $1999.00 (introductory MAPP). Available in September of 2001, the new low-priced MDR24/96 makes Mackie's phenomenal hard disk recording technology available to a much broader audience.

"We are very excited about the MDR24/96," stated Scott Garside, Recording Products Market Manager at Mackie Designs. "It compliments our existing product line very well and provides a perfect recorder alternative for users who don't require the advanced graphical editing capabilities of the HDR24/96, but would still like to experience the benefits of Mackie's hard disk recording technology. The MDR24/96 is truly "plug and play" for people more interested in music than manuals."

Fully compatible with Mackie's HDR24/96, the new MDR24/96 includes an internal 20 gigabyte Ultra-DMA hard disk that delivers over 100 minutes of 24-track recording at 48kHz and a built-in drive bay for Mackie Media M-90 recording drives and Mackie Media Project backup drives.

The MDR24/96 ships with 3, 24-bit, 48kHz analog I/O cards as standard. Optional digital I/O cards are available. Sync and clock capabilities include MIDI MMC and MTC, SMPTE, video blackburst and Word Clock. A standard 100BaseT Ethernet port for connection to PC's and networks is also included.

The MDR24/96 is also fully compatible with Mackie's new Remote 48 Pro remote control ($1499.00 MSRP; available Fall, 2001). With the Remote 48 Pro, users can operate two hard disk recorders from a single control surface-allowing an MDR24/96 and HDR24/96 to function seamlessly as a full 48-track digital recording system with advanced editing capabilities for under $7000.00!

The MDR24/96 benefits from true non-linear recording-providing far more recording time per gigabyte. Non-destructive recording capabilities allow users to record multiple versions of a track or track segment without destroying the original. All edits are non-destructive as well and the MDR24/96 allows for up to 999 Undo's. During playback, the recorder recombines the non-linear segments into a seamless soundstream.

Features include:
  • 24 Tracks - 192 Virtual Tracks - for up to 100 minutes of continuous recording
  • Built-in 20Gb internal disk plus pullout bay for extra Mackie Media (tm) removable hard drives
  • 100 BaseT Ethernet port built-in
  • 3.5 inch drive bay for importing tempo maps and software upgrades
  • 24 channel of Analog I/O standard
  • Optional Digital I/O cards
  • Full Meter Bridge
  • Non-destructive cut, copy and paste editing (with free upgrade)
  • 999 Un-Do's
  • Sync to SMPTE, MIDI, and Word Clock & Video blackburst)
  • Optional remotes available

The MDR24/96 will be shipping in early September, 2001. The MDR24/96 will also be on display at the 111th annual AES Convention in New York from September 21st - 24th, 2001. Mackie will be located in booth #1110.

Congratulations John Grgurich!

Feature Article

The December guitar giveaway winner was picked on Christmas Eve from 1,809 entries. The winner is John Grgurich from Washington, D.C. USA.

We e-mailed John at home last night to inform him that he had won the guitar and he just responded this morning. Needless to say, he was very surprised! "I can't believe it" John stated, "I've never won anything this nice in my life and to get the e-mail on Christmas Eve is incredible!".

We'll be shipping John's shiny new Serpent to him tomorrow via FedEx, so he should have it by the end of the week. Once again we'd like thank all of you for your entries. It became quite apparent that the better the prizes we giveaway, the better the response to the reviews that are submitted as entries - so keep your eyes peeled for more great contests in the future.

One last note: Of the total number of entries received in the form of review submissions, we kept less than a thousand due to incomplete information, too few words (and we're pretty lenient on that) or no contact information. If you're going to enter a contest, please be sure to include a complete e-mail address so that we can contact you to let you know you're the winner!

That's all for now. Thanks again for participating and get ready for our next great contest which will hopefully start in January.

Happy Holidays!

Chris

Yamaha RBX-170 Electric Bass Guitars

Press Release

Building on the legacy of the popular Yamaha RBX Series electric bass guitars, Yamaha Corporation of America is ready to take today's music to the cutting edge and beyond, with the Winter NAMM 2002 introduction of the affordable RBX170.

"This bass simply rocks," says David Bergstrom, director of marketing, Combo Group, Pro Audio & Combo Division. "Now, beginners or weekend warriors can own a quality Yamaha bass without spending big dollars."

The RBX170 sports an Agathis body, Maple neck, Rosewood fingerboard and chrome hardware. Electronics include split single coil pickups (straight type) and passive volume, tone, and balance controls. "The best thing about the RBX Series is their no-nonsense approach," notes Gary Cook, product manager, Yamaha Guitars. "They're designed to deliver solid performance night in and night out. You can hear it in the way the pickups bring out the tone woods, and you can feel it in the construction."

The RBX170 is currently available in Gloss Black, Red Metallic, and Dark Blue Metallic at a suggested MSRP of $249.

MM-1 From KORG re-defines metronomes

Press Release

Korg, the industry leader in metronome and tuner technology, introduces the world's smallest metronome. The new MetroGnome(tm) (MM-1) is an extremely compact metronome that clips comfortably on the ear. Lightweight and unobtrusive, the MM-1 is powered by a 3V Lithium battery, eliminating the need for cables. The MM-1 has a tempo range of 40-208 beats per minute, and selectable time signatures (from 1/4 through 1/7), plus duplet, triplet and quadruplet beats. Featuring a streamlined design, the MM-1 is available in a range of colors including gold, silver, black, and dark blue.

Until now, musicians using a metronome while practicing in high volume situations were faced with two problems: They either had to strain to hear the unit's internal speaker because of insufficient volume levels, or rely on headphones with cables that interfered with their freedom of movement. The MetroGnome eliminates these problems and allows players to focus on their instrument without any distractions. It can also be used as a convenient "click-track" for accurate time-keeping in home and project studio recording situations.

The MM-1 will be available in October 2001 with a suggested retail price of $24.99.

Acoustic Guitars

As a gift, I got this guitar. The purchaser walked in to Guitar Center for an electric guitar, but decided she liked acoustics. The manager directed her to this one. As it was a gift, I don't know how much it is.

It has very sturdy design and wood (I know; it's been through a lot). A good sensitive pickup (more about that later). And the tuning machines are just right.

It has a pretty weak equalizer, i.e. it doesn't do much. But if you turn one of the knobs all the way, down, the signal stinks and the amp doesn't like it. The pickup is merely adequate in terms of how loud you play. So that makes it bad for soloing, but better for strumming chords, the main point of an acoustic-electric.

Very good quality. I haven't had to use the full warranty yet!

As far as acoustic-electrics go, it's very normal, and good for the price. Pretty good for different sorts of music, except it's not the best for one-note soloing.

MusicYo

Yo-200

Acoustic Guitars

Purchased guitar over the internet for $89US. I needed a flattop guitar to use while teaching.

The high quality of workmanship. and materials, solid spruce top and reputation for good value of MusicYo.

Everything about this guitar is as advertised.

The unit is well made (Indonesia) - the materials and workmanship are first rate for the cost. I particularly like the low action of the instrument - helps with barre chords up the neck.

Great value for a beginning, or intermediate player. A pickup can be added from the same company (www.musicyo.com) for a nominal price - either soundhole or permanently mounted type.

314CE

Acoustic Guitars

I made my purchase in store at the guitar center (NJ). I spent 1300.00 after tax

I found this model to have the sweetest tone and balance after playing the 414,614 both of which are considerably more money than the 314ce i purchased.

nothing

A well designed n solid guitar. It has all the attributes of a guitar costing much more.

Play it n you'll love it
