Christmas Gifts for Guitar Players & Guitarists

(MGR Staff | Posted 2003-11-09)

Christmas Gifts for Guitar Players & Guitarists

What kind of gift can I get a guitar player for Christmas? It's a tall order. Almost as challenging as what do you get the person who has everything. Yet, success is achievable when it comes to choosing gifts for guitar players. You have to be careful, though, god forbid you pick a wrong brand or piece of equipment that will not work with the guitarist or musician's existing equipment setup.

For this reason, we are going to explain and list some items that ANY guitar player would appreciate finding in his or her stocking or under the tree. These are gifts that anyone can use. If you happen to be one of the fortunate ones who knows exactly what you want and have a budget or price range you are looking for, click on the Holiday Gift Wizard graphic on the right side of this page and you can go right to Musician's Friend and start your shopping. If you're still unsure, though, read on for some possible ideas.

Guitar Strings

Every guitar player can use a change of strings. Some more frequently than others depending on how much they play, sweat, and other factors. Be careful with this gift, though, because guitar players tend to be very choosy about the strings they put on their instruments. If you know this person well (or live in the same house), chances are you'll see a pack of strings laying around. Make sure you write down the exact brand and model, as well as the numbers. You will see something like: .010, .046, etc. These are the guages of the strings and are very important in choosing the right strings as a gift. A picture of a popular brand of strings with the string guages marked on them is below:

Also, you'll want to make sure that you are buying the proper strings for the instrument the gift recipient owns. Acoustic, Electric, Classical and Bass guitars all have specific strings made for them.

Gift Certificates

The old stand-by of gift certificates works just as well as any other gift for guitar players. This way, you're sure to please, as the guitarist will be able to select exactly those products that he or she needs or that work with their equipment.

Guitar & Recording Software

Many guitar players enjoy writing their own music as much as playing the music of others. Guitar recording software makes it possible to record on a computer and, if so equipped, burn the music onto a compact disc. Check first to see if the guitar player has any computer related recording software or equipment. I can think of no guitar player that wouldn't appreciate this gift. There are, however, several software vendors on the market and software ranging in price from about $50 to several hundred dollar packages. Just keep in mind that the software may have specific requirements as with anything you purchase for a computer.

Guitar Brand T-Shirts

Unless your favorite guitar player likes to play in the buff, he or she has got to be wearing something cool and stylish while playing. Many brands of guitar manufacturers have logo t-shirts available at music retailers. This is always a cool gift for any musician. Take the time to try and find out what brand of instrument the guitarist owns so that you pick the right brand, of course.

Guitar Cables

I may be speaking for myself here, but I just can't have enough guitar cables. A good instrument cable is a core ingredient in getting quality, low-noise sound out of your equipment. Fender makes a nice quality cable in the ElectroVolt series as well as does Monster Cable. Most guitarists probably have a cheap cable that they are using so a nice cable is definitely a good gift. Plan on $15 to $20 for a quality cable.
