KEYBOARDIST JIMMIE BONES BRINGS PEAVEY KB* SOUL TO KID ROCKPeaveyPosted 2004-01-31 Jan. 22, 2004, PEAVEY INT'L. HEADQUARTERS—Kid Rock's new self-titled disc is a fairly roots-oriented affair, admits Jimmie Bones, keyboardist for Rock's Twisted Brown Trucker Band. But anyone surprised by the stylistic shift must not have paid close attention to "Cowboy" and "Only God Knows Why," two enormous hits from the rapper/Southern rock revivalist's 10 million-seller 'Devil Without a Cause,' or even the Sheryl Crow duet "Picture" from its successor, 'Cocky.'
Jimmie Bones helps make all this possible. After years of touring and recording with Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise, Bones hooked up with soon-to-be-omnipresent Rock, who was transitioning from canned-beat rapper to arena rock star. "Bob," as members of Twisted Brown Trucker refer to him, liked Bones's B-3 and Wurlitzer work with Bradley and blues legend R.L. Burnside, and invited him to jam.
Although he insists that Bob is the songwriting catalyst for Twisted Brown Trucker, all the sweet, surging keys and bluesy, honking harmonica on Kid Rock are due to Jimmie Bones. The MVP of TBT (he even covered bass duties on his keyboard when 'Devil' blew up) relies on Peavey amplifiers to keep his band charged up onstage, with a KB5 for his keys rig and a Delta Blues* for his raucous harmonica leads.
"The KB5 gives me some really good power and a nice warm, round tone," says Bones. "I needed something with a lot of clarity and some juice. I need to be able to compete with two guitars, and we really like a little bleed onstage. This is rock 'n' roll, you know?"
Although Bones used a KB 300 amplifier during Kid Rock's Warped Tour run a few years ago, he only recently switched to the KB Series full time. "When I was covering the bass, I had to put together a monitor rig that would double as a bass rig and a keyboard rig. I had kind of a standard bass rig setup with 15" speakers, because that configuration works well with keyboards, too—but I also had a rack and mixers. It was kind of overkill. I needed a really clean sound, but I needed it to be full and true, so that's why I switched to the KB5. It's self contained."
