Virsonix BBE Sonic Maximizer Plugin for Windows
(Virsonix | Posted 2001-10-22)

Anyone that’s familiar with the BBE Sonic Maximizer knows that if you want to add some serious dynamics to your recordings, this is the processing tool that you want to use. What’s been lacking for years, though, was a way to apply this sound processing, affordably, to your computer based digital recordings without purchasing the rack unit and pre-processing your sound prior to recording your tracks or sending your mixdown through the processor before recording onto an ADAT machine or other digital recording device. Enter Virsonix. This company has developed a DirectX plugin that perfectly emulates the processing power found in the BBE Sonic Maximizer and works in any Windows based application that supports DirectX plugins.
Distributed by Cakewalk, the BBE Sonic Maximizer plugin will provide your recorded tracks with the vitality and dynamics that you’ve come to know with many professional recordings over the years. Virsonix has partnered with BBE Sound, Inc. to produce this gem that runs in any application that supports the DirectX standard. The plugin supports up to 32 bit floating-point processing and will sample up to 96k. If that’s not impressive enough, wait till you fire up the plugin. What you get on screen is a pixel-licious representation of the BBE Sonic Maximizer. The plugin screen even has real-time level meters, knobs and controls that work just like the real unit!
Once we downloaded the plugin, we set to work reviewing the unit in Cakewalk’s new Sonar package. We recorded some drum tracks, added the bass lines, and layered some electric and acoustic guitar lines on top. After we had an arrangement we liked we applied the BBE Sonic Maximizer plugin processing and were quite surprised to realize that we were clipping many of our tracks. After a quick email to Virsonix, our answer was that we hadn’t adjusted the on screen level control. That’s right, folks, the controls on the plugin display work just like the ones on the real unit. After adjusting levels, we soon were making sparkling recordings that really showed off the power of the plugin.
This plugin adds real life to digital recordings. If you’re like us, you’ve probably noticed that some of your digital recordings, although incredibly crisp and clear, just lack some life. With the BBE Sonic Maximizer plug in, you’ll breathe new life into your recordings and your most prized projects.
Bottom Line:
The Windows DirectX version of the BBE Sonic Maximizer is sold and supported by Cakewalk. For a mere $129 ($99 for registered Cakewalk users) you can begin to use the BBE Sonic Maximizer in your own digital recordings. For the price, we don’t think you can find a plugin that will add as much to your recording projects as the BBE Sonic Maximizer.
