Three Kings of Custom Guitars Unveiled at Daytona Bike Week
Three Kings of Custom Guitars Unveiled at Daytona Bike Week

Press Release

2004-03-16

The Gibson Custom Shop, working with three of the best-known custom motorcycle builders, took guitar design to a new level last Friday with the unveiling of the Three Kings of Custom guitars at an invitation-only reception at Daytona Bike Week.

Arlen Ness, Dave Perewitz and Donnie Smith, who have over 75 years of combined experience in building motorcycles, teamed up with the Gibson Custom Shop in November 2003 to design three unique custom guitars. Along with the guitars, they each designed and built a "Gibson-themed" motorcycle that they also unveiled at Bike Week.

The event attracted over 150 VIPs and members of the press, including television crews from Speed Vision, E! Entertainment and the Travel Channel. Members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Lynyrd Skynyrd helped with the unveiling.

With the bikes already on display and Skynyrdıs Gary Rossington playing a Lynryd Skynyrd Epiphone Les Paul, each of the guitars was unveiled one by one to great response from all.

Donnie Smith's guitar is heavily influenced by his motorcycle background and is designed to resembled the gas tank from a motorcycle - complete with gas cap. Combine the unique body with an unbelievable flame paint job over the pearl orange base coat and you have one great looking guitar.

Dave Perewitz's guitar is based on a 1957 Les Paul Goldtop reissue. Dave chose a traditional guitar body after talking to some of the members of Aerosmith, who are regular customers of his. They convinced him to use the classic Gibson model and to put his own stamp on it with one of his signature paint jobs. Dave's "Gibson" motorcycle is over-the-top, too, with guitar-shaped mirrors, custom-built wheels that look like the guitar necks, and a paint job that matches the theme of the guitar.

Arlen Ness is known around the world for his motorcycle designs and his guitar did not disappoint either. Drawing from themes that he uses throughout his line of motorcycle accessories, his guitar resembles a shield with a raised "A" logo that extends into the fingerboard. The guitar also features one of the most intricate paint jobs ever to grace a guitar, and the paint scheme of the guitar is carried over into the bike that Arlen designed and built.

Be sure to keep your eyes open for press coverage in all of the major motorcycle magazines in the coming weeks as well as TV wrap ups on the Speed Channel, E! Entertainment, PAX-TV, and the Travel Channel. For more information about the Three Kings of Custom program, email 3kings@gibsoncustom.com.
