You know that sound you've been looking for? The one that no matter what music store you walk into you just cant find it...maybe your looking in the wrong places.

Drummers are known to be creative on occasions, so look around the house and find the sound you want. Glass has a really unique tone depending on the thickness and how heavy a stick or dowel you use to play it. Big coffee cans have a really neat chunky tone to them and you can change the pitch by punching holes in the bottom of them.

Metal bowls also have some really neat tones and they also change when water is added. Next time your in the kitchen, take a large metal mixing bowl and put about an oz of water in it, hold it with both hands, strike it against the sink and swirl the water around. Vary the amounts of water.

Another neat one is fill a 5 gallon bucket full of water and grab a piece of metal pipe or pvc pipe, and set it in the water and strike it with another metal/pvc pipe, sounds will vary as you move the pipe in and out of the water.

You can mic any of these sounds, and try them out anytime your looking for a different sound in your music.

This reminds me of what we used as "cowbell" back in 1969 when we played "Honky Tonk Women" by the Stones. It was a 12" cast-iron frying pan. Back then, it was usual for bands to dress and take breaks in the club's kitchen. We were doping that when our singer discovered the pan and started banging on it. It sounded so good, we borrowed it and used it onstage. Very resonant. Plus, if you're hungry, you can't fry eggs in a cowbell wink

Haha I like it man I haven't even looked at frying pans yet, but I would imagine the resonance is pretty hefty.

Pans, cans and bottles always end up being part of every record I've done so far. There is always a way to creatively use their unique sounds.
Check this out, this post remind me an article I read not long ago:

I have a "Guiro Mega Gordo" made from 12" [dia]
plastic culvert. I guess it's not really "made from"
cuz it still is unmodified ridged plastic culvert. So
far I haven't found the best "stick" for it. Regular
sticks are waaaay too light. I'm thinking maybe a
billy club or such, extrapolating from the sounds
that regular sticks produce on it.

Cuz the ridges are so large and far apart, regular
sticks can get hung up between the ridges. The
right stick will hafta have enuf diameter to glide
over the grooves without getting caught in them.
