I have played around breifly with slides but have never spent much time with one. What kind of slide do you recomend I start off with?

Most of the players I know use steel slides. They also come in glass, ceramic and brass. I've been told that glass gives you a smoother sound. There a re a couple of companies that make "half slides" that allow you more easily switch from slide to chords without taking the slide off. You can get a steel slide for a couple of bucks. I'd try one of those just to see how you like it. You'll have to experiment to find the right fit: you want it tight but not so tight that it can't come off. Duane Allman used to use Coracidin cold capsule medicine bottles when bottles were still make of glass.

I had a glass slide for about a day, and I kept getting warned that it was gonna get stepped on. Guess what? It did.

I recommend steel, because that's almost all I've seen anyone play, although improvised objects like those medicine bottles can have a much cooler effect. I like to use music stands from time to time.

As a guitar slide, of course. You just have to move the guitar instead of the "slide." Just use the beam part of the music stand.

Back in the late '60s -- I know you weren't even born then -- our guitarist used to do just this during his blazing fast solos. Never failed to a get a rise out of the crowd. This was before Hendrix or any other crazy guitarists had arrived on the scene, by the way.

Youngster is a state of mind. I'm sure that anyone who thinks that if you started playing bass after the Fender Precision was invented, you don't really play bass.

I guess by that, the only real bass player was Carol Kaye. Everyone else is a faker, right? haha. Do you still have clips of your guitar player playing on the stand? That'd be something to put up on youtube. And it'd be better quality than 50% of the music videos on there.

Back then, only rich people had video cameras and there were no cellphones, so the likelihood is that if someone has something, it's on 8mm film. Also back then, there were Carol Kaye, James Jamerson, Duck Dunn, Larry Knechtel and Joe Osborn as the first-call studio bassists. Most of them used P basses, but Joe used a Jazz (although he used only the front pickup). There's a list somwehere of the hits Joe played on -- The Association, Fifth Dimension, Carpenters and so many more. Carol, to her discredit, claims she played on Motown hits that were actully done by Jamerson, and Motown has the studio logs to prove it. But she's still a great player.
