A friend had a Ludwig set from the mid-70s that had an 18" kick that sounded much bigger. Nice set. I also played in the '70s with a guy who had two 28" kicks, a mounted 16" tom and 18" & 20" floor toms. Kinda big, but we were loud.

Those old school Ludwig kits had a massive presence!! I definitely understand what your saying about the attack of that small 18. Sometimes even in newer construction kits you can find either an 18 or 20 that just dominates.

Good lord! TWO 28's??? That is insane!! I couldn't imagine rocking two of those bad boys, one is more than enough for me and 18 and 20" floor toms? Wow. That was a monster kit to say the least I would assume.

Oh my word! That's unbelievable - I think I found a picture of the floor tom you're talking about!

That's it! Changing the heads was a ... well, you know.

Yeah two 28's. best description I had when he got both going was "like a freight train." Funniest think was, the drummer was about 5'4" And you could hardly see him behind the kit. we called him Toulouse Lautrec. He had dark hair and full beard and looked just like Jose Ferrer in"Moulin Rouge."

Im still just astounded at the thought of having two 28's. Just...wow. Yeah I could definitely see the whole Freight Train analogy. Haha I could just imagine seeing someone sitting behind that beast that was a smaller individual. See the top of the head and the whites of the eyes and nothing more haha. I bet it took almost a week for him to fully tune all his heads.

Alex that pic is great haha, I wonder if that was the bass that was made for Purdue university..or something to that affect. I remember reading somewhere once that Purdue has the worlds largest concert bass, the thing is mounted in a truck and driven through their parades, their football games and special performances.

Nothing says motivation like beating on a 35 foot drum. I wonder if the slaves ever sassed back to the slave driver for using poor technique and not targeting properly? I'd like to think so!

I've been playing in a Pearl EXR Series for almost 5 years now. I think it's a great kit for the road. I had a DW Classic Series with me on my last european tour and I had a lot of fun with it.

For the studio, Yamaha kits always blow my mind.
