I few weeks ago I had a chance to track my kit using the Yamaha SubKick as my kick drum mic. Let me just say I was very happy with the results. Before this session I always viewed it as some crazy thing Yamaha created for Carter Beauford to make his kit look even more ridiculous than it already does. Now I am a believer.

It captured a great beater sound with crisp attack as well as that colossal boom I love on a good rock ballad. I'd like to credit the engineer for the good sounds but I even bypassed his EQ and it sounded great! I will post a link to the recording when it's finished in the next few weeks so you can hear!

Has anyone else used this mic? Can we even call it a mic or a reverse speaker transducer? What are your favorite kick mics?

I love the SubKick. It sounds great, especially on your kit, Alex.
I like the combo of the SubKick out and the AKG D112 in.

Just read an interview with bassist Leland Sklar in which he said he tried the subkick on his bass cabinet and it worked just as well -- especially in a stadium gig.

I might have to try that!
I usually just record bass DI, but that seems like and cool option.

Hmm, very cool, Laklander. I guess it makes sense that it would sound great and probably be a great representation of the bass considering its the same size as most 10" bass speakers. Two identical transducers, one creating a sound and the other capturing it - now I feel like I have to try this!

Haha, Trev...Not sure if you were following correctly - we were referencing using it on a bass amp - not a drum kit!

One of the reasons the bass on the Beatles' "Paperback Writer" sounds so good is because the engineer hooked up a 15" speaker as a microphone and stuck it in front of Paul's bass amp. Same principle. I played for a short while in a wedding band where the drumer had som,e kind of mic hooked up inside his bass drum -- made a heavy impression through the subwoofer in our system. Almost too heavy.

It was a late night. Haha! My bad.
I do wanna try it on bass, though. See how it sounds.

Maybe that engineer deserves some royalties on the Yamaha SubKick!

Laklander, I'm always surprised as to how many little things you happen to know in so many different area's of expertise. It's great to learn from you!

I am a repository of useless information. I have good memory, I guess. I should go on Jeopardy.

I agree with Alex. I've only been on the site for a few days and I've learned a ton!
