I'm curious: has anyone out there played the Dingwall Combustion five-string bass?
http://www.dingwallguitars.com/hear-it/This is Dingwall's low-priced ($1200 street) version of the Afterburner ($200) and Lee Sklar sig ($4600) . The Combustion takes a multiple-scale approach, with a 37" B string and a 34" G, made possible by the way Dingwall arranges the bridge and using a fanned-fret system. If you haven't seen fanned frets, they look wild -- they actually slant, with wider spacing at the bass side of the fretboard. Some players seem scared by this, but from what I've read, it's very easy to adapt to, and the Dingwall necks are so comfortable that the increased scale doesn't feel unnatural. Theoretically the 37" B is the best in the business. One drawback is that the basses take proprietary multi-scale strings made by Dingwall. I'd love to try one but I'd have to drive to Jersey. They do have them at Basscentral in Orlando and I'll be therr in April, so a drive to the store may be possible. Anybody played one and, if do, what did you think?
