I'm curious: has anyone out there played the Dingwall Combustion five-string bass?

http://www.dingwallguitars.com/hear-it/

This is Dingwall's low-priced ($1200 street) version of the Afterburner ($200) and Lee Sklar sig ($4600) . The Combustion takes a multiple-scale approach, with a 37" B string and a 34" G, made possible by the way Dingwall arranges the bridge and using a fanned-fret system. If you haven't seen fanned frets, they look wild -- they actually slant, with wider spacing at the bass side of the fretboard. Some players seem scared by this, but from what I've read, it's very easy to adapt to, and the Dingwall necks are so comfortable that the increased scale doesn't feel unnatural. Theoretically the 37" B is the best in the business. One drawback is that the basses take proprietary multi-scale strings made by Dingwall. I'd love to try one but I'd have to drive to Jersey. They do have them at Basscentral in Orlando and I'll be therr in April, so a drive to the store may be possible. Anybody played one and, if do, what did you think?

On the BadAssBassPlayer site there's a
Dingwall constuancy that is so smitten
that it's scarey. They all 'can never go
back' to regular frets ever again.

Their zeal makes me toadally afeared
to EVER even touch a Dingwall ... cuz
IF they are all sane and true zealots,
what will I do with my dozens of well
loved normal basses that I can never
touch again ? ! ?

Plus I know how to get righteous tone
from a normal 5-string. Acoarst, the
fannned fret claim is dual, claiming
both improved tone and ergonomics.
So build me a fan 'fret' URB and I'll
be happy to try it out ! In case you
think I jest, Dingwall really does
make fan 'fret' FL bass guitars !

Ooooppzzz ....

Shoulda been clear about this:

Fanned 'fret' FL's are ALWAYS lined.

If you have the perfect ear, and your
muscle memory is superhuman, I'm
sure you could custom order a blank
plank version ... but, you'll never be
able to re-sell it to anyone else !
