I love alternate tunings. I often play in open D, DADGAD, open G, DGCCGD, and a few others I experiment with.

What other tunings have you tried or play most often?

DADDAD -- used on "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by CS&N. Or is DADDAD "open D?"

JOni Mitchell is the queen of alternate tunings. I'm sure she used many "standard" alternates, but she also used to tune her guitar to whatever sounded good and go from there. David Crosby also uses many alternates. I saw CSN way back in 1969 on their first tour after their debut LP was released and they opened with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes." Not long into the song, Stills -- who was the only one playing guitar -- broke a string but just kept going.

I am HUGE Joni fan, she is one of the best songwriters this world will ever see. And yes, she loves alternate tunings. Many are in standard D and G, but she was definitely a tuning experimenter. I like to cover her tunes and it can be extremely difficult when the tunings are her home made ones. I wish I could have seen CSN in 1969. Haha. They still play but they are not quite as fun...

CSN&Y was the first act that carried its own PA. No one had seen a show like that before. They used mostly old Bassman 50 amps with the tweed covering for guitar, stacked about six feet high. Quite a show. I saw them again at an amphitheater in the '90s but it wasn't the same. Also saw Crosby & Nash together and tht was a good show.

I use a tuning that I stumbled upon when I was listening to an Alter Bridge album. On the song "Open Your Eyes" Mark Tremonti uses the tuning DADADD.
Given that he plays it on his signature PRS Singlecut, the tuning on an acoustic is a bit harsh on the strings I use due to all the up tuning on the G and B strings, so I usually play in this tuning a half or whole step down.
Open tunings are also great gateways for songwriters to find new ways to play/write.

I love that tuning Trevin. I only use it on my ovation because it can handle the weird neck tension and some how stays in tune. It really gives it an almost twelve string sounding character with the 4 d's ringing through. Paul Stokey used to play his twelve string down two steps from standard tuning and it sounded huge. This tuning reminds me of that except not quite as low.

Love DADADD. That gives a very cool D droan. DADDAD is very neat as well.

I've been experimenting with various tunings on my 4-string Fender. GBDA, GbGbDbAb, FAEbAb, etc. You can really open yourself up to totally new sounds and completely new chords that weren't possible (or very accessible) on an instrument before until you start tuning differently.

I remember wondering how in the WORLD Michael Manring played "Monkey Business" the way he did until I found out he was tuning to Db (low octave),Db (next octave),E,B. But he has custom strings made at will for him, so.....................yeah.
