What are your thoughts on Capos? Can you get by with the elastic wrap around $3 capos? Do you have to go up to the Kyser and spend $18? Or do you have to go all out and by the $40 G7?

I don't know anyone using the old elastic band capos anymore. Most of the guitarists I work with use Shubb, Dunlop or the G7. From what I've heard, the G7 makes it much easier to just slap on a capo without having to retune every time.

I think I am going to have to try the G7. I have plenty of Kyser capos and they work ok, but they are not the best for intonation. I bought the Planet Waves dual action capo which was supposed to cure the intonation issue by letting the user adjust the amount of tension of the capo. It seemed like a good idea, but the capo is terrible, it is not strong enough to hold down medium gauge strings. It would work fine as an electric capo but I never use a capo when I'm playing electric. The G7 is spendy, but I will pay the $40 to not have to re-tune. And it doesn't matter how high end the guitar is, it is just a fact of life that capos bend the strings out of tune.

I love Kysers, and that's what I use right now. They're affordable and user friendly and don't pull out of tune too bad.
But I know a bunch of guys and gals that use the Paige capo. It's a pretty slick little guy, but they're a bit pricy.

I'd have to say that after many years of playing acoustic guitar I realized there was something out there better than the Kyser that wasn't such a pain in the butt every time you put it on. Yeah - it may grip tight and provide a seamless seal on your strings, but rarely goes on without needing some extra tuning. The G7, although I don't own one, almost always provides a very in tune result no matter where you place it up or down the neck (at least for me)

I think people tend to consider a capo one of those non-important things to invest money into and I strongly disagree. If your capo can't be thrown on quickly and throws your guitar out of whack every time you use it, you look amateur and unaware. I'd say invest in the best and reap the benefits in the long run!

I agree completely Alex. It's $40 which is not outrages to command for something so versatile for your instrument. Here is a ridiculous analogy: You live in Leadville Colorado, (The highest town in the lower 48, >10,000 ft) and you are in the market for tires for your car. The sixty dollar tire is just your regular all season tire. It will work but it is going to require some very special attention, just to back out of your driveway in December. The studded snow tire is an extra $20 and while it still not guaranteed to keep you on the road, you have a much better chance of getting out of your driveway.

Good point - buy the cheap stuff at the grocery store but buy the best when it comes to the durables.

Check out www.weaseltrap.com

I think that's the spelling. In any case, very interesting capo, although not a typical capo.

I love the whole idea behind that.

I sort of do the same thing with the Gruv Gear FretWrap. Still working on a video of it...it's taking forever...but it'll happen. Just you wait.
