I have never tried playing a 12 string guitar. So I only know enought to be dangerous. But from what I understand all a 12 string acustic guitar does is ad an extra string to each of the six courses with maybe an octive difference to add tone. Does anyone play a 12 string on here? I have been looking for information on tuning a 12 string we just picked one up and it is obviously not tuned but I can't get it to sound right.

Tune the regular EADGbe strings first. Then tune the octaves to those.
They are wonderful for warming up acoustic sound, giving your chords more of a full and well-rounded tone. Generally, they aren't meant for finger picking, but some people have figured out how to do it on a 12 just as well as a 6. I have no idea how.

I haven't touched a 12 string guitar for years, but I'd like to eventually get one.
Has anyone here ever played one of those 12 string Stratocasters? I think that would have a great sound with the 12 strings combined with the phasing possibilities of the Stratocaster pickup switch.

I'd like to experiment on a 12 string. I am learning on a 6 string but I would love to see the depth of sound I could get on a twelve string. Is it harder to fret a 12 string. I mean do you tend to have to watch where your fingers go more than a 6 string?

Grenalda, they generally are spaced about the same as a six-string. The only difficulty curve is for your plucking/picking hand, to be honest. Your fretting hand does the exact same thing it's always done on a six-string.

That's cool! I'd love to try it. I have a dulcimer that has five strings instead of three like a normal dulcimer. It gives it a lot more depth of sound and I love the way it handles. It makes a great deal of difference in the strength of the sound, the resonance and the depth of the sound. I would assume the 12 string guitar would be the same.

Hey Opti I am not sure if you are still around but if you need help with the 12 string I can give you my method. It is kind of long and detailed. Let me know if you are still interested. Like Shackman said it gives off some great tunes so I hope you don't get discouraged.

Has anyone here played a 12 and 6 string double neck? I imagine that would get kind of heavy during a set, but I've always thought they were cool.
I liked Jimmy Pages Gibson, and I think Rich Dodson of The Stampeders had a Fender with a 12 string and a Tele combined, way back in the 70s.

Denny Laine used a 6/12 doubleneck with Wings, and Mike Rutherford of Genesis used to use a Shergold doubleneck with interchangable necks, usually a 12-string and bass, and Geddy Lee of Rush used a Rickenbacker with a bas and either 6 or 12 neck, although he didn't during last year's tour. I'm not a guitarist, but I have fooled aoruind with the SG-style 6/12 model that Page used. Yes, they are ridiculously heavy -- two necks and a bigger body. Not something you'd want to use all night. I can't see the need for one except in a trio situation like Zeppelin or where the player must swicth quickly between 6 & 12. When I saw Paul McCartney in DC this past August, Brian Ray played six-string electric for the first part of "Band on the Run" but during the orchestral interlude switched to acoustic 12 for the rest of the song.
