I was going through my old pedals today and came across my Rat pedal [not to be confused with the Turbo Rat]. This little number rocks and delivers great sound even at a low volume, which means it's great for late night practicing.

Just a couple of knobs makes it easy to use.

Since this is a music gear review forum I actually wanted to give a short review/ shout out about something I think others out there would like.

Would this by chance be an original Pro Co Rat from 1978 or one of the later models? I used to have a '78 and really loved it.

You mean that you have the original Pro Co RAT? You have made me curious now. There are literally hundreds of types of Rats. I don't have one myself since I am not a professional. I am just learning to play the guitar.

I've never heard of that. I have a Big Muff from the mid-seventies and I played with a guy who used a Tube Screamer.

Is the rat a fuzz box like the Big Muff or more of an effect that gives cleaner crunch?

I love the Rat. I have a Rat from the mid 80's. No frills, 3 knobs and cloud of dust. I also have a R2DU. It's two rackmounted Rats with a foot switch. Kills. It has very cool routing and patching possibilities too.

I read in an article once that ProCo never gave any Rats away for consideration and that Joe Walsh and Joe Perry, who each claim to have not bought a piece of gear in 35 years bought one. Joe Perry used one direct to the console for the remake of 'Walk This Way'.

It's funny how this one piece of gear is almost legendary for being a simple fuzz box. Not even the first one.

But I plugged my friend's old no-name bass into one and had an absolute ball. I'd love to get one and run it stereo with a clean and dirty signal at the same time, like Clapton does.
