OK, Golem .. you asked for it. This poll is about your preference of rounds: nickel or stainless? I know there are hybrids like the Rotosound that have nickel over stainless, so if you chose that category, tell us what you're talking about.
Stainless or nickel?
Only one choice allowed (4 total votes)
Stainless: I like clank! - 2 (50%)
Nickel: I like warmth! - 2 (50%)
Hybrid: I like New York in June! - 0 (0%)
Other - 0 (0%)
Voting on this poll ends: 09/09/10 01:14 PM

Simple. I just voted nickel. Not nickel
wrapped over stainless or nickel plate
on steel wire. Pure nickel alloy for me.

In the context of the thread title, I've
gotta bleeb "other" is about any other
variations of nickel and/or steel. IOW
nylon is not considered here :-)

TIJFs are nickel alloy. We will not get
into their textile content just now.

Sometimes I play D'A 1/2rounds, but
only the 2-digit versions, not the 3-
digit. IOW I use the "72" but not the
"172". "17X" is their "Nickel Wound",
which means nickel plated steel. "7X"
is labeled "Pure Nickel Alloy".

Most brands offer "nickel" only as a
plating. I've played a few and there
can be a slight warming, but it's not
like *real* nickel. A slight warming
is pretty worthless when The Klank
still remains.

Hahahahaha, Ctargia, I actually HAD gut strings on my upright once before. SO EXPENSIVE. NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN.

I mean, if you actually want notes that die within a second and a dull thud instead of tone, sure...go for it. Spend the $400 on strings. Be my guest. (etc. etc.)

I've always been a stainless steel fan ever since I got off of the nickels and tried Rotosounds (thank you, John Entwistle!). I'll still play half-rounds and flats, but I like the punch of the stainless steels no matter what I'm doing. I'll sometimes consider tapewounds on a fretless or if I reallllllllly need an upright tone but can't use my upright for some strange reason.

I use stainless RW on my Weed Wacker
cuzza the way they really cut through ...
And if I rouse up a python or a mamba,
I know I can turn him into sushi faster
than you can say Rikki Tikki Tavi !

I'll try that next time I'm out for Chinese. Although even though they're called cat-gut, they're actually made of sheep/pig intestine.
