Seeking some input from players who've
replaced the bass speaker in their 1x12.

Of course, I'll want good bottom without
having to bring along a 1x15, but I have
zero concern for "sparkling highs". OTOH
the midrange is important, cuz I typically
play FL 4-string. If I'm playing 5-string I
use a 1x15 when I need it. I'm trying to
optimize a ported 1x12 [no horn] for my
typical style, FL tuned DGCF. I do want
some good bottom, but NOT for a low-B.

I haven't replaced a speaker in agwes, so I'm no help. I've been told that JBL and EV no longer sell raw speakers. Used to be that if you wanted instant improvement in your cab, you'd slap in a JBL. Eminence seems to be used in many amps these days.

I'm noticing that. Just browsing around, with
no one's advice, it seems as if all roads lead
to Eminence these days ...

I'm currently attracted to this one:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=290-510

Wattage is about right [MarkBass SD800 head]
and the efficiency is waaayy impressive [99db].
If you're into lightweight amps, and I am, then
you gotta be into speaker efficiency or you're
just robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Looks snazzy. I don't know what's in my Genz-Benz NEOX cab, but it puts out a ton of bottom due to cabinet design.

Right.

That speaker I'm considering is not a
subwoofer. Subs have really terrible
efficiency down in the 85db range :-(

Subs seem to be intended for dance
club installation with many thousand
watts of amps in their racks. Plus the
10 lb magnets [really ... 10 lbs !] on
the subs doesn't match my idea of a
light, portable cab.

I'm counting on cab design for a 'big
bottom' effect. It's a ported cab with
loads of batting in it.

Wellll-suh .... if you'll follow your own link, the
answer will smack you upside the eyeball, and
so I searched around and it appears to not be
available to civilians as a replacement speaker.
Suxbad cuz it looks like a real contender :-(

It's a GNX 12300 Neodymium Loudspeaker ...
I'll betcha gotta turn in the dead one to order
a replacement, like with an EBMM PU etc etc.

What you say is actually documented:

OK the URL wouldn't go blue and be clickable,
but it does work if you cut-and-paste it :-/

Didn't occur to me that GNX might be an actual manufacturer. Figured it was a SB thang. They do sound good but I wonder how much is the speaker & how much is the cab design.

I doubt that there's any "GNX Speaker Mfr, Inc."
that builds and sells a range of "GNX Speakers".

"GNX12300" is prolly a model number assigned
by the subcontractor that builds them for G-B.
It may be Eminence or JBL or who knows ... but
the G-B website/catalog does not offer it for sale
as a raw speaker or replacement part.

There is a similar speaker, an Eminence, made
specifically to Aguilar specs, different from any
other Eminence speaker offered by dealers that
sell Eminence raw speakers .... and the Aguilar
version *is* available for on-line purchase, via
Aguilar's website, for anyone who wants to buy
it. There is no requirement to exchange a burnt
out one to buy a new one.

-------------------------------------

Similarly, the "MFD" PUs that make a G&L bass
a real G&L can be bought directly, no exchange
required, but EBMM will only sell a replacement
PU in exchange for a returned same-model PU.
Just differing philosophies about what it takes
to set one's product apart/above from the rest.

When I got my first EBMM, it had a BassLines
PU .... which didn't mean much to me except
that it sounds good and so I bought it. I knew
that 'Bergers come with EMG's, Kramers come
with Dimarzios, etc, so for all I knew, EBMM's
normally come with BassLines. Presumably, it
doesn't too much bother EBMM what PU is in
my StingRay, but they *are* bothered ... very
much bothered ... that somewheres out there
it's likely that some non-EBMM bass is wearing
an original EBMM PU, from my Ray. "The sky is
falling ! The sky is falling !"

I bleeb the only parts you can buy outright
from EBMM are tuners and pickguards, cuz
you might bend a tuner, and you are allowed
to pimp out your MM with a different PG :-)
