I can play a little bit but I am not where near ready to start doing some of the crazy things I have seen others try. I have been looking around online to try and find maybe a book or a video to help me with effects but some are over the top for me. I did catch Hal Leonard Guitar Effects Pedals - The Practical Handbook and thought maybe this would be one that kind of "dumbs it down", has anyone read it?

Good book, nice tips. It has some of the vintage effects combined with new age as well so its a nice starter book for someone who has found their talent right yet.

I'm sure there are also plenty of articles online you could check out.

Virtual Music Corporation has a good software lesson called Play Guitar My son uses it and says it is great because it starts out for a beginner and grows with you. This link is to a review that top 40 Magazine did in the reviews section. We looked at some of the free lessons on line and they were not very good. This one is around 35 bucks you should check it out.
