I haven't tried any of the newer mulit-effects boards, but I must admit I always liked some of the retro stomp boxes like the MXR phase shifter and the Ibanez Tube Screamer.

I still have a Big Muff that I haven't plugged in in a long time.

I think that Electro-Harmonix, Moog, and Eventide are a head and shoulders above the rest for sure. When it comes to bass, I haven't found a distortion pedal that can match the tone from EBS' Multi-Drive. Their other pedals in the Black Label series are pretty rediculous too.

AKAI? I don't know about that. But if you're looking for a good manufacturer then I suggest you look for Moog.

For solidity and ease of use, MXR & Boss. Line 6 has an array of digital modeling stompboxes that are very nice and pack almost 100 effects into one relatively small package. The M13 and M9 modelers are solidly built and have a couple of settings that are worth the street prices on the units -- $400 for the M9, $500 for the M13. Tapping to set the delay level is a great feature, and the choruses and distortions are very nice. The might seem pricey, but you'd pay this much for 3 separate effects pedals -- why not get so many more for the same cash?
