PS on recording rehearsal/practice:
Dunno about you, but lizznin to our
fearless leader run down a tune and
call out the changes is nothing that
burns accurately [nor hardly at all]
into my memory. And my writing it
down as he plays is always flawed.
But if I record him as he does that,
then I can pause it during playback,
which gives me time to write out an
accurate chart with a sense of meter.
Also, if our 'Assistant Leader' writes
a chart, there's no meter. Where I'd
rather write out 8 bars as 8 chords,
in 2 lines:
DDDG
DAAD ,
he would write it out as 5 changes,
and all 1 line:
D --- G -- D -- A --- D .
Actually, he tends to write to the
width of the paper, regardless of
the structure of the tune.
He's writing only the changes, with
'squiggle lines' between them that
represent approximate duration 'til
the next change. Not bad, not great.
So, I'm getting to love my recorder.
