Ovation Celebrity Acoustic / Electric Guitar Reviews
Make / Model: Ovation Celebrity Acoustic / Electric Guitar
Gear Type: Guitars
Cost / Purchase Detail: I purchased my ovation used in Austin TX in 1997. I paid $300 for the guitar, hardshell case, and a stand. This Ovation is made in Korea which might explain why it cost $495 new at that time. I previously owned a solid-body electric that had a faulty bridge and was looking to purchase an instrument that would be both acoustic and electric. I also liked Ovations unique sound when I tested it.
What you like: The synthetic body produces a rich mellow sound especially while playing arpeggios. I also like the high quality tuning heads that keep my guitar in tune for approximately a week. The fretboard is wider than the conventional solid body guitar's and since I have long fingers this makes playing more comfortable and prevents string overlap. The adjustable truss rod is a major plus that conventional acoustic guitars don't have.
What you don't like: I wish the neck was not bent as much. Although a higher action is sometimes nice, I prefer a low action. I'm not sure if this is due to the acoustic 'side' of the instrument. There's not much else to complain about an Ovation!
Construction / Quality: It has a maple neck with inlayed frets. The guitar body is made of a synthetic polymeric material which could be proprietary. I realize that US guitars are probably of higher quality but this Korean make comes quite close to the ones made here.
Bottom Line: This is a great instrument for a beginning to intermediate player and suits the wallet quite nicely. I would strongly recommend purchasing it.
