History:
Purchase: I purchased this unit at mother's music in Edmonton $425.00 canadian. I was orginally looking for a five string. I tried Ibenaz, peavy, Squire and fender, even Yamaha. The Yamaha they had wasn't bad, but I heard so many bad things about them that I didn't want to take the chance. I tried the Dean five string they had, it wasn't bad but I felt the Edge 4 had more of an edge I was looking for, since it has actice pick-ups.
What I Like About This Unit: The neck is Comfortable good enough to do slap playing or even other forms of jazz. Provided that you have a descent amp the sound is rather good. I like playing to rock songs of Rage Against The Machine, System Of A Down, etc.. The bass itself seems to hold up, I unintentionally put it through some abuse but it still let up without any problems, though I would advise you take care of it. I own a peavy ten inch amp and there is a good sound that comes out of it. I bought the amp because of the price and the durability it had, but I was nervous on how it would hold up, the reality was that it produced very good sound. I want to see how it sounds with other effects. The area where you have to the battery is simple and quick. it maybe a dumb thing to point out but I've seen ones where you have to use a screwdriver to get teh battery in an out.
What I Do NOT Like About The Dean Edge 4: At first I had a little problem with the controls, I spent a while trying to figure out ways to get the tone as the right pitch when playing certain songs but that is nothing really, that is how it is with any bass. One thing to note though that if you a living in appartment and basements suite, don't turn the volume all the way up, I have a ten inch amp, and it rumbles through the walls at half way. I had a few comlaints that way.
Edge 4 Quality: The bass holds up rather well due to the unitentional abuse I gave it. The sound quality is there if you want to add more of an edge to your play technique in a band or play along in other songs
Summary: all in all, it is a good bass. It is a good bass to start out with but it is able to hold it's own if you have to wait to get another upgrade.
