History:
Purchase: Guitar Center in Colonie NY US $350 for the
floor model, documented as new, under full warranty, because Guitar Centers decided to
cease selling the Portabass series.
What I Like About This Unit: Only weighs 14 lbs/6kg and puts out 250W
@4ohm, has loop blend knob the usual array
of ins & outs, 4knob EQ, shift buttons for
the hi & lo mids, plus deep and brite.
It's got an AC power pilot light like an
aircraft landing light. You KNOW when you
leave it powered on.
What I Do NOT Like About The Ampeg Portabass PB250 Head: Cannot operate at less than 4ohms.
Costs more than Acoustic Image amp of same
power, but Ampeg is 3X heavier [however it
has the Ampeg tone, and 14lb is still very
small for a bass head].
Portabass PB250 Head Quality: It's a brick house.
Summary: For a solid state head it has terrific tone
and in particular it has Ampeg tone. Most
of the time I use it with a Portabass 12"
and they are very well matched. It's not
so well matched to the Portabass 2x10 cab,
as undesirable distortion creeps in when
you run that at about 2/3 power. I think
it's somewhat overpriced. If not for the
clearance price on the floor model, I know
I wouldn't be using it. I've rated it a
"4" but that ignores the price.
