Ashton Review: AB1

Ashton Bass Guitars

History:

Purchase: I bought this little lady from Pro Audio, at about au$240 including postage, because I needed a bass to learn on. Looking back, I should've got something full scale, as I'm sure the short scale could make things annoying for a little while once I get a full scale.

What I Like About This Ashton AB1: I love the feel of the neck, it's nice and slim, with the perfect growth along it as you get higher on the frets. The sound's great, it has one Ashton P-Pickup and it delivers very well for such a cheap bass. I love the shape, it's a great little comfortable bass, and perfectly contoured for comfort. The tone control really delivers, and the cutaway allows you to reach right upto the 20th fret with ease.

What I Do NOT Like About The Ashton AB1: My only 2 problems were the action, which seemed to be too tight and gave some of the frets a little bit of buzz, and the factory strings that came with it, that needed constant retuning, but they were replaced 2 months ago and I haven't had a problem since.

Ashton AB1 Quality Rating: This is one sturdy unit, I've dropped it once, and it's been through numerace bumps and scrapes, and it's held strong perfectly through the 6 months I've had it.

Review Summary: For anyone looking to learn bass, I'd recommend this, but it's definitely worth saving that little bit extra to buy the AB2 for it's longer scale, as it will have alot more use in the future.
