Ampeg Review: SVT 4 Pro

Ampeg Bass Guitar Amplifiers

History:

Purchase: Upon moving away from California (and coming into a large signing bonus- $$$), I felt it necessary to upgrade my GK 400RB to the 4Pro. This transaction set me back ~$1100 from Guitar Center.

What I Like About This Ampeg SVT 4 Pro: The tone is great. Ample EQ control. The low end is enough to force a bowel movement. I typically run through an ART effects processer (using it as a preamp with a light touch of reverb/chorus, etc.), but running dry almost forced my hand into pawning off the ART.

What I Do NOT Like About The Ampeg SVT 4 Pro: The volume is pretty decent, but might use more power. This could be an artifact of my cab (currently a SWR GoliathIII), or limitations of the processer). It's also a little heavy, but perhaps that's a call for me to hit the gym.

Ampeg SVT 4 Pro Quality Rating: Solid.

Review Summary: This amp works for me. Enough power for what I'm doing, and quite a bit of versatility. I'd almost say it's worth its weight in gold, if you can carry that.

Rating of this Ampeg product: 5

Ampeg PB112 & PB210 PortaBass Cabinets - If you can pay the piper, you get Ampeg sound in a very light portable form, but you may find yourself wanting a head that can drive 2 ohms. OTOH, for single cab situations, the 4 ohm impedance extracts more power from your head [vs 8 ohms]....

Ampeg PBC2112 Portabass 112 Combo - VERY disappointed. Ampeg really lost it on this one. I guess that is why the searchs are showing the real stores list them as discontinued, and some are hiding on ebay selling them with no support, just a big SORRY. Go for the B 100R. It is cheaper, ...

Ampeg VL1002A Lee Jackson - My main amp, I choose this over my JCM 900 100 watt 5881. Which is good but, I just like the tone better. I also noticed that after I rewired my cab to 8 ohm, the output of this head nearly tripled, so if you have volume problems with this head, try ...

Ampeg B-15R - This is a unique bass amp, full of vintage vibe and tone. You may have to "mike it" for use in a big venue, but for a smaller club and for Blues and Oldies it is the way to go. The dollies help make it transportable, and it is the coolest looking bas...
