Sabian Review: 14" HH Regular Hats

Sabian Drums Percussion

History: Drummer of 3-4 years. I generally play Classic Rock in my band and Jazz whilst at home. I listen to all types of music but especially progressive rock.

Purchase: In real terms, I paid approximately £150 (UK) for the unit, importing from Canada. In actual UK retail terms, the price would be more in line with a £250+ purchase.

What I Like About This Sabian 14" HH Regular Hats: These hi hats have a fantastic 'chick' sound when played with the foot. They have a good level of stick definition and create a very pronounced 'sloshy' sound when played partially open. The choked sound is an aquired taste, but once it's been aquired you'll be choking it all day. These hi hats are a great choice for anybody looking for that more 'traditional' and darker spectum of sound. These can cut through a mix but are not really designed for that. The only exception is that 'chick' sound which is very defined and obvious. A great time keeper on jazz-ride patterns.

What I Do NOT Like About The Sabian 14" HH Regular Hats: I'm not too keen on the logo. Initially the sound took some getting used to; but I've always played with brighter cymbals. These hi hats are perhaps not hugely versatile but within the spectrum they provide are a serious choice.

Sabian 14" HH Regular Hats Quality Rating: Sabian's manufacture as ever is flawless. These are constructed of B20 bronze and hand hammered as opposed to the more common machine hammered cymbals. The hammering marks are obvious and the cymbals are finished in a 'brilliant' fashion. The bottom cymbal is considerably heavier than the top cymbal, as should be the case.

Review Summary: Definately a serious choice for anybody looking for a good set of jazz hats or those looking for a darker palette of sounds. Comparable to the Zildjian 'K' line and similar in most aspects.
