Epiphone Review: Valve Jr.

Epiphone Guitar Amplifiers

History: I've been playing guitar for several years now, solely out of solid state combos -- Peavey Rage 158, Crate GX40C and a little unit I built (Second hobby: Electronics). I play only for myself, not in a band.

Purchase: I purchased the Valve Jr. from Musicians Friend on sale for $99.00 -- and shipping was free. I thought that it would be a nice way to get into true tube sound and a great price. Since I don't play in a band it was perfect for in home playing.

What I Like About This Epiphone Valve Jr.: I love the units look and feel -- it's got a classic styling and the covering is well put together. Now to the best part - the sound. I was thinking that for $100 I was going to get something mediocre. Boy was I wrong. It's crystal clear until you crank it up, then you get a nice warm distortion reminicent of many old tube heads -- but of course not quite mimicking any. For bedroom/practice use I would say that this is a great unit. You could probably even do a small club with it and larger ones if they'll mike you. That isn't in my realm of experience though.

What I Do NOT Like About The Epiphone Valve Jr.: My sole complaint about this unit is that it doesn't have a headphone out jack. It's got three jacks in the back for 3 different ohm loads but no phones jack on the front =(.

Epiphone Valve Jr. Quality Rating: This is built solidly -- It'll stand the test of time if you don't neglect it. There were no blemishes or scratches when I got it.

Review Summary: All in all this is a terrific purchase for the price, especially if you don't already own a tube head. After I buy a bass amp I'll probably purchase a second Valve Jr. as a backup -- or the next "size" up.

Epiphone AJ-15 - For the price it is as good as it gets. Detail and cosmetics are good. Projects good sound. Anyone wanting a decent guitar that looks and plays good for around $200.00. this is the one to get....

Epiphone Eb3 5-String Bass - Anyone who wants a Vintage look in a 5 string , this is the way to go....

Epiphone Les Paul 50th Anniversary - To sum up? Weeeeeellllll, I hate to say this about a “one-trick posing machine”, but it`s awfully nice. Awfully. It may be basic compared to what, say, Ibanez , Maverick or Parker can bring out for the same price, but for once, I`ve met a Les Paul I...

Epiphone Emperor Regent with Single Pickup - A good budget archtop guitar, fine playability and a clear, warm jazz tone. The only thing I replaced is the floating bridge; I put on an ebony bridge to further improve tone. If you can live with the "misplaced" tone controls, it's a fine instrument...

Epiphone LP Junior Special - It makes a great classical electric, especially if it's free....

Epiphone Les Paul Special - I regret buying this guitar so much that I returned it, and ordered a LP 100 instead. I know Epiphone makes good guitars, but this model should never have been released. I've never played anything so bad. I'm not afraid to buy the Epiphone LP 100 tho...

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus - If your an intermediate player or a long time player looking for a good deal used or new this guitar is a good deal you get the look of a gibson for a much more affordable price and it has better materials then the regular epiphone les paul standard....
