Crafter Review: Convoy SP

Crafter Electric Guitars

History: I'm in my 40's and I have been playing the guitar for 20 years. I've not played in a band but I have roadied for some top acts, supporting Iggy Pop, the ramones... to name but a few. My main interest in guitars is as a luthier. Although just a hobby, I've now made six electric guitars, customised, repaired and setup many more. I actually own 18 guitars!

Purchase: I spend a lot of time in guitar shops and I stumbled across the crafter convoy whilst waiting for parts (in Rikkaxe in Bristol). I didn't particularly like the look of the convoy in satin black but I was amazed at how good it felt to play. Impulsively, I bought it on the spot for £245.

What I Like About This Crafter Convoy SP: 1. It is so amazingly light I wondered if it was semi hollowed (it isn't). It's fantastic to play with a strap on it. I could walk around with it on all day. It feels quite small. 2. I think it is the mahogony wood that makes the neck feel so great. A much warmer and friendlier feel than maple. This is accentuated by the matt/silk finish. Very nice to the touch compared with a hard candy coating. 3. Although it was set up pretty well when I bought it I've managed to set it up to perfection as the build quality allows this. 4. Its very simple with no bells or whistles. A nashville bridge with through body strings and smooth machine heads (all in black) keep the guitar in tune for ages.

What I Do NOT Like About The Crafter Convoy SP: To be honest there isn't one thing that I don't like about it. The pickups could be improved on (although pretty good for rythm) but for the price I'm not complaining.

Crafter Convoy SP Quality Rating: Mahogany body and set neck with a rosewood fingerboard. Abalone (or anodised metal) fret markers. Satin black finish.

Review Summary: I've played some top end guitars and I can say in all honesty that the convoy feels like a £1000 instrument.
