History:
Purchase: I'm new to drumming so this is my "entry level" kit. The kit was purchased at Guitar Center in Paramus, NJ. The shells alone were $399.
What I Like About This Unit: The drums give a great fat sound, and resonate very well. My choices were between the Tama and the Yamaha Stage Custom. I chose the Tama kit because even at entry level they have the Starcast mounting system which is usually only available on higher end kits. The Starcast system really does improve the way the kit resonates
What I Do NOT Like About The Tama RockStar: I was recommended by some drum friends to replace the factory heads with Evans G2's and an EQ3 on the bass. The only real problem I have isn't with the drums, but with the people who sold it to me. At the time I didn't know much about drums and was sold a fusion kit. After playing for a year and on other kits, I would much rather prefer a full sized kit.
RockStar Quality: What do you like best? 9-ply basswood, 2 ply mahogany.
Summary: Ok, if your going to buy a kit, especially at entry level, don't buy one at Guitar Center. The employees must work on comission because they try and sell you everything. (The saleman tryed to sell me a Gibralter Rack too) I found out after my purchase that when these big stores buy from Tama, they get the whole kit, except cymbals. Guitar Center sells everything seperatly so now you stuck buying pedals, stands, hardware and cymbals which they mark up.If your looking for an entry level kit, the Tama Rockstar gets an A in my book. For the price, you get an excellent kit with some features only found on kits 3 times the price.
