Ampeg Review: B50R

Ampeg Bass Guitar Amplifiers

History:

Purchase: I purchased the Diamond Blue Bass B50R at my local Guitar Center for $371. After reading that it had won the combo shoot-out at bassplayer.com, I went to check it out and agreed with the review.

What I Like About This Ampeg B50R: Sweet killer tones eminate from this unit. The lows shake the house warmly, the highs ring true (without sounding brittle), and when you go from the lows to the highs the transitions are smooth. My other amp (a fender) has a 15 inch speaker with 400 watts, and I prefer playing through my B50R. Oh, and the retro look draws admiring comments.

What I Do NOT Like About The Ampeg B50R: The B100R has several more features. While I was not looking for a 100 watt unit, I would have paid a little extra for the features in their 50 watt model. And wheels would have been appreciated.

Ampeg B50R Quality Rating: This unit is solid and lives up to the ampeg name / tradition. I'll bet Jamerson would have one in his home if he were alive today.

Review Summary: Unless you need special features (such as a line in to play along with CDs), buy it.

Rating of this Ampeg product: 5

Ampeg Portabass PB250 Head - For a solid state head it has terrific tone and in particular it has Ampeg tone. Most of the time I use it with a Portabass 12" and they are very well matched. It's not so well matched to the Portabass 2x10 cab, as undesirable distortion creep...

Ampeg PBC2112 Portabass 112 Combo - VERY disappointed. Ampeg really lost it on this one. I guess that is why the searchs are showing the real stores list them as discontinued, and some are hiding on ebay selling them with no support, just a big SORRY. Go for the B 100R. It is cheaper, ...

Ampeg Dan Armstrong AMB1 - I give this bass a 10 for sound, appearance, and construction. Whether you want to play softly like Darrel Evans, or funky like Flea, this bass is great!...

Ampeg BA-115 - If you wanna play small clubs and stuff like that the BA-115 isn't a bad choice unless you have $$$ to spend. I hate this 200 word thing...

Ampeg B3158 - Great amp, I would buy it again if it were a tad bigger, but it will last me a while...

Ampeg PB 250 - The PB 250 is a great amp for any bassist that is looking for a powerful head unit that is small, lightweight and attractive (in my opinion. I expect this unit to serve me well for many years to come....
