Zoom Review: GFX 707

Zoom Guitar Effects

History:

Purchase: My rents ordered it from Harmony Central for me about 2 years ago now for around 135 bucks. I was looking for a multi effects pedal to cut my teeth on as I'd only been playing guitar for about a year and a half.

What I Like About This Zoom GFX 707: This pedal has a tone of effects, and when I was still stuck with my little peavy practice amp it really mixed things up for me. There's an effect called VHALEN that has some super sick distortion that I still mess with to this day. I used a few of the other effets, the jazz and blues tones, and some of the amp simulators a little bit when I was using headphones and whatnot. Overall, it has tons of effects and tone settings for you to play with.

What I Do NOT Like About The Zoom GFX 707: My biggest beef with this pedal is how artificial most of the effects sound. A while ago I started recording into my computer and editing with acid pro, and no matter what I did it always sounded thin and fake. You can't combo the effects at all unless you take the time to make your own effect and even then switching between effects in the correct order can be a pain. I'm definately moving to stomp boxes now. My halfstack and its built in distortion coupled with a delay and phaser pedal are keeping me WAY happier than this thing ever made me.

Zoom GFX 707 Quality Rating: Construction is alright, its made of plastic but I guess its somewhat durable. After about six months of use however the quarter inch input got kinda jacked up, so whenever I used the pedal I had to prop something against the side of the input to keep pressure and assure a solid connection, otherwise it sounded like TV static. yuk.

Review Summary: Decent pedal for a newb just getting into guitar. Its got a lot of show and not so much go go go. If I had the choice to buy this again knowing what I know now I probably wouldn't do it. Just pick the few effects that you want and buy used stompboxes on ebay or something.
