OLP MM3 5-String Review

OLP Bass Guitars

History:

Purchase: U.S. $250 new

What I Like About This Unit: This bass is a solid piece of machinery. I bought this bass new at Music Go Round. Mine is a natural elm finish and it looks beautiful. The thing I like most about this bass is the sound quality and playability. This bass has a neck that is extremely playable, and the fretboard is great. The sound quality is absolutely superior to all other products in the price range. Some bassists prefer active pickups, and often newer bassists will be sucked into the sales pitch of buying an active bass but will purchase a lower quality Ibanez or LTD (as opposed to Warwick or Musicman, which are high end active basses. Ibanez and LTD are still wonderful basses). The price on these low-end active basses can run from $300 to $600 for a product that does not deliver as well. This bass will give you the same exact sound, maybe better, than these alternatives and all for a lower price. I play in a band that gigs a lot (jazzy grunge rock, if you can imagine that). I play against two Marshall halfstacks, and even with a simple Fender Bassman 60 or Carvin ProBass, this bass can keep up and exceed all expectations. Plus it looks hot.

What I Do NOT Like About The OLP MM3 5-String: Absolutely nothing, I have worked out every penny I paid for this, and then some.

MM3 5-String Quality: Obviously, this product is an imitation; what Epiphone is to Gibson, OLP is to Musicman. This also means lower quality components. The only problem I have had so far is a loose volume knob, which is easily fixed.

Summary: This bass will give you the best bang for your buck and the best sound for your money. Whether you are looking for a grungy rock metal sound, a cool smooth jazz riff, or even some funky blues poppin' and slappin', this is the bass for you if your budget restricts you to anywhere below $500.
