Epiphone EB1 Reviews 3

Bought it in summer 2001 for £320 - I bought it for its looks and the fact that it had a stand (not that the stand is up to much really, but if you were serious about playing it as an upright 'Sting style' it would be easy to build a better one). I wasn't going to buy it at first because of the painted on F hole, then read up on the original Gibson EB1 in a guitar encylopaedia and realised it was the original design and it was the quirky 'prototype' design that swung me

It looks fantastic! Its probably really suited more for jazz and straight blues/rock then anything, as its a straight copy of the 1950 version, and rock and roll hadn't been invented, let alone funk and all that 1980's twiddly stuff...

The only thing I would say is that it needs setting up proffesionaly upon purchase as I find the sound gets a bit muddy when the action is lowered. If you don't know what you're doing it can get a bit fiddly. Also - that stand - pretty useless, and would probably collapse after a few stage gigs, but it would be simple to construct something more durable

Good quality, nice and solid, beautiful finish and nice to play. (Apart from the stand)

All in all - an unusual instrument, but probably more for the collector/enthusiast/'50's retro fan than for the beginner...
