Chicago’s Gravity Mastering relies on Genelec Monitors

If you happen to be mastering your audio project at the Gravity Studios in Chicago, you will be able to check out first hand their new monitoring system that uses Genelec’s award-winning Bi-Amplified DSP Monitors 8205A. Chief Mastering Engineer Doug McBride describes that there are only two ways of having a perfect mastering room: by building the control room from the ground up, or by finding world’s most powerful and advanced DSP to correct time alignment and room modes. Chicago’s urban intense and expensive area led McBride to solve the problem by choosing the later. After some exhaustive research he wound up discovering that Genelec’s DSP was the perfect match for the task.

“The sole goal was accuracy,” states McBride, who opened Gravity Studios in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood 18 years ago. “I needed a monitoring system that would allow me to hear the truth, no matter how nasty! I've got a home system whose sonic signature can give me a back rub, but at work I have to have the truth.”

The Genelec 8250A features an ingenious, flow optimized reflex port that provides solid, clear, and articulated low frequencies without compression, distortion or port noises. Combined with the advanced Genelec Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™) and the rounded edges and gently curved front and sides of the MDE™ (Minimum Diffraction Enclosure™) enclosure, the result is an astoundingly flat frequency response both on and off axis. Other benefits include imaging precision and minimum listening fatigue. Carefully designed DSP crossover filters with extremely steep roll-off characteristics feed dedicated power amplifiers for each of the low distortion drivers. The 8250A features magnetic shielding, overload protection circuitry and versatile room response controls as standard. The Genelec Loudspeaker Manager™ (GLM™) control network and software enhances further the performance of the 8250A: it features adjustment of levels, distance delays and flexible room response improvement equalization with the reliable and robust AutoCal™ automated calibration system via the GLM control network. The 8250A has both analog and AES digital inputs in combination with a digital thru connection.
