It has a metal casing, but as with all condenser mics, the insides will break before the outside if you don't take proper care of it. I treat mine with more care than any of my stuff; keep it in a safe place, away from moisture and risk of getting knocked over or hit. The Sennheiser E 945 is a wonderful microphone for the price. Sure, it may be more expensive than the industry standards, but there is a tangible reason for it. The industry standards are workhorses, but vocal microphones are specialist microphones, and thus, I have only tested it on vocals. I am not sure whether these will fill a workhorse role... I've been using the Sennheiser E 945 dynamic microphone for about two years and I've found that it is great at what it is suited for, which is on vocals for live shows.
